Walking Initiative

Arklow Community Colleges Walking Initiative
Every day (except Wednesdays) all students are invited to meet at the front door to go on a 15 minute brisk walk with their teachers. The perimeter of the school measures a distance of ¼ of a mile. Students have the option of walking this 4 times (1 mile) or 6 miles (1 and half miles).

If student commit to this challenge they could walk up to 6 miles a week, that’s 24 miles a month in just 15 minutes of their lunchbreak!!!!, when they would probably just be sitting in the canteen anyway.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to take responsibility for their own fitness and health and get involved in this physical activity which is freely provided for them. If students want to bring in runners, they can leave them with Ms Corbett, who will store them in a box, so they will not take up room in their locker.

If getting fit isn’t an incentive enough, we have even created some great incentive prizes to motivate students to take part. e.g. walk 5 miles and receive a free gift. Future incentives may include walk 20 miles and win a ticket to the movies in school, walk 50 miles and win a place on an activity day out.

The following are some videos to help you with your walking

Emoclew Slí na Sláinte - 3kmThe Emoclew Slí na Sláinte is 3km in length
and starts at the roundabout at the top of
Upper Main Street. The route continues along
the Wexford Road for just under 1km and turns
right onto the EmoclewRoad. Passing the
Arklow Town Soccer Field and the Cemetery,
the route turns right at the t-junction onto
Coolgreany Road. Follow the route back to
the starting point at the roundabout to
complete the 3km walk.
